How can I prepare my child for this test?
For younger elementary aged students you can begin by not calling it a 'test'. It is an opportunity for you to come and find out things that were covered well and mastered in the year, and learn about areas that need more work in the coming year. Some of the activities will require an oral response, and other parts will involve writing short answers, but all will be much like activities that you do at home. No coloring in black dots on scantron forms with number 2 pencils, or laboring over lengthy essays and wordy responses.
Does my first grader need to be tested?North Carolina regulations require that a child have a test on record before their 8th birthday. The WJIIINU's normed age begins at 5 yrs old. If your child is experiencing difficulties in one of the three areas of academics covered in the Standard Battery, it is often a useful tool for instructional planning and diagnostics. There is no compelling reason, beyond your need for input to have a child assessed prior to age 8.

Where do parents and siblings go during the testing session?
Parents and siblings are welcome to stay on the first floor of our home, and enjoy the back yard, swings, and tree houses available in our woods, at your discretion. Standard Battery test administration typically takes between 1 and 1.5 hours with consultation and review of results to follow. You are welcome to drop off your child for the testing process, and return for consultation afterward - whichever makes you and your child most comfortable.

What if I have multiple children needing assessment? If you have 2 children, they will be assessed individually, one following the other, with the consultation to follow the conclusion of the last child. If you have more than 2 children to register, there are a few options. You may schedule up to 4 children on one day. When more than 1 child is scheduled on any given day, they will be tested individually, one after the other, and consultation /review of results, will occur immediately following the completion of the last child's assessment.

Schedule for March or May?Why do some families choose to do testing in March rather than in May or June? The WJIIINU testing instrument is standardized in such a way that your child's level of proficiency can be accurately measured on any given month of the year. Their responses will be compared to other students in the same grade and date of assessment. In some instances it is beneficial to discover or validate weaknesses while you still have a few months of your school calendar to remediate. Others choose to test before the annual NCHE conference (in May) in order to be prepared for curriculum purchases and decisions at the vendor fair.
